Your hair color is a distinguishing characteristic—don’t take it for granted

The number ONE way of maintaining a youthful appearance is with hair color. But, the proper choice of tone and depth is essential. It is not enough just to cover your gray hair. The color must have the multi faceted translucent sparkle of nature.

What color products do I use?

With over thirty years in the industry I have used many of the major hair color lines. I choose to work with Clairol Professional and Redken Shades EQ because they are the most translucent and they are a liquid hair color. As a mix master and an artist, liquid color is better for adding a drop of this a drizzle of that to create and control tone and undertone. It is vital to understand that product is secondary to technique. Any product will yield great results if used properly. As a master colorist I often use more than one product line to achieve a desired result. Many hairstylists who call themselves “colorists” are simply product company robots. The product manufacturers try to do the thinking for the stylist. These individuals are not colorists and they don’t give theirs clients what they are paying for.

What is different about your hair coloring technique?

For Optimal results, the base hair color should be pre colored for richness of tone. Then multi toned highlights are added. Sometimes might just be a burst at the top or ¾ of the head. Hair that has been previously colored requires different formulas applied on roots and ends. An oxidative hair color is used to cover grey roots and low or no peroxide refresher is used to sparkle and strengthen the previously chemically treated hair. Usually the mid strand and ends just need to be refreshed with a gloss. And for some grey coverage can be achieved with a non oxidative color. These techniques will ensure that your hair will sparkle with the translucent tones of nature and as an added bonus, be in better condition then prior to professional hair color treatment.

Will this work for all hair types?

Together we can create a hair color formula and maintenance schedule that works best for you. Hair color is my paint and hair is my canvas.

Should I bring pictures?

Yes, I always welcome pictures, they are a great tool.. This helps me see what you are envisioning and then we can expand from there. But they are not necessary

What About hair color for men?

There are many options for men too. But men’s hair color can be tricky. If the hair is very white I generally don’t recommend total grey coverage. In about two weeks those white side burns show and start to look like Grandpa Munster! I have a signature technique that can add a youthful look to men’s graying and white hair. It warms up the blue tones that exist in grey hair and gives a look of blonde. This is really low maintenance too. I have many techniques for grey reduction that can grow out gracefully depending upon the existing tone.

Expert cutting & styling

I am Long Hair Friendly!

I understand the needs and respect the requests of clients with Long Hair.

For many of my long hair clients, I will approach the cut differently.

Sometimes the best way to do a “health trim” is to cut the hair dry. I shampoo, blow dry and flat iron the hair before cutting. This technique allows both of us to see exactly what needs trimming. I will always work with what the client is comfortable with. I have great product recommendations to preserve the integrity of longer hair.

Over the past decade countless individuals have proclaimed “The Flat iron has changed my Life!” Thanks to twenty-first century technology there is no longer a need to suffer with unwanted curl, frizz waves and kinks in your hair. Even seemingly straight hair is so much better when polished with a high heat, tourmaline flat iron. And these ionic irons do not damage the hair! Got to love technology! And guys, it’s ok to iron your hair too!

The best irons are not cheap, but well worth the price. Anyone that has struggled with a mediocre iron and then traded up to a Pro iron will rave about the incredible difference. Why? Well for one ceramic and tourmaline are the crucial for keeping the hair in good condition. Add ion technology to create unparalleled shine. High heat (around 400 degrees F or 210 Celsius) and constant temperature will save you lots of time and frustration. There are many good irons, but I love the Sedu. The shine this iron creates is like no other!

Client Carla Ponti states:

I have very curly hair that was impossible to straighten with a regular flatiron. I would come home from Linda's salon with a great look that everyone loved, but I could never get my hair that flat at home. Then, Linda recommended the Sedu flatiron. Linda helped me choose the Sedu iron, which is specially designed for curly hair like mine. The very first time I used the Sedu iron, I had fantastic results. I now use it every day.

Another popular brand iron is the Chi

In the late1970’s blow drying hair was a novelty and barely accepted as a grooming aid for many men. But, with time and evolution men using a blow dry became as common as using a comb or brush. Currently, the

flatiron is the ‘new blow dryer” for men’s hair styling issues. Why not? Providing the hair is long enough (about two inches or more). It is a quick and easy way to eliminate annoying waves and curls and control some front cowlicks. Since the explosion of the flatiron on the hair scene, countless women have proclaimed “the flat iron has changed my life”. And there are guys that love the flatiron too, but embarrassed to admit it. The stigma is fading, the flatiron can be a regular part of hair care for men too. For guys ahead of the curve, the 1 inch wide Sedu is a really great flatiron that heats in thirty seconds and straightens hair effortlessly it is small and light weight with a comfortable grip. For hair shorter that 2 inches try this:

TS2 Detailer Mini Flatiron. Comes with a heat safe glove!

Girls! It's great for your bangs and cowlicks, too. See my 'ask Linda' page.

Saving Grace suggests try a sample tattoo first!

The American Society of Dermatological Surgery states that about 50 percent of tattooed Americans later regret getting a tattoo and wants to under go the costly and painful process of having it removed. Why? "This is all because they didn't choose carefully.”

Many wish they would have had the tattoo drawn bigger or smaller, put it somewhere else on their body, or would have chosen a different design. An alternative to this might be trying different temporary designs prior to imbedding ink in your skin permanently.

Saving Grace Salon and Timid Tattoos can hand draw custom designs that last from one to three days with alcohol based movie industry style body art. Try many different designs before committing to something so permanent. Henna is also a great alternative. Henna stains the skin and can last for one to three weeks. It is only a shade of reddish brown and for some designs such as kanji characters, names or words or even tribal designs.

It's a great way to try on a tattoo. Pricing for in salon designs start at $35.00 and go up in price depending on the design. Send a picture for a price quote.

Linda, how did you first learn about henna?

I decorate and adorn people and I draw, what’s what I do and have always done. So when I noticed the trend of Mehndi gaining popularity in the US in the mid nineteen nineties it was just a natural thing for me to learn. New York and Los Angeles were naturally on the forefront of this movement. In the music world, you had Madonna and Gwen Stefani drawing mainstream attention to this once forsaken art form. I studied the medium, and partnered with Annette Angel Lahr of Timid Tattoos. Angel was one of the most renowned west coast pioneers in the henna industry. I began offering henna and other temporary body art as a salon service. Additionally, I work with Timid Tattoos for parties and events. View http://www.timidtattoos.com

What is Henna or Mehndi?

Saving Grace Suggests: Try A Sample Tattoo First!

HENNA is the oldest known cosmetic. Its use can be traced back more than 5000 years to Egypt, who was believed to have gifted the plant to India. MEHNDI is the art of henna body painting.

Mud is made from finely ground dried leaves of the henna plant (lawsonsia inermis). It is mixed with citrus, essential oils and varied natural ingredients with strong staining properties. This mud is used to draw freehand designs on the body. The henna mud must dry for twenty-five minutes and remain on the skin for a minimum of one hour, longer if possible. The result is an orange tone stain that will oxidize in 24 to 48 hours to a rich brown color. Note: True henna is never black the mud is greenish in color. Black body art claiming to be henna can be harmful due to its questionable chemical mixture.

How does the henna work on the skin?

Henna stains to the deepest cells of the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin. This surface layer is in a constant state of renewal. The renewal process takes one to four weeks. The design gradually fades as the skin renews or exfoliates. It is helpful to exfoliate and moisturize a few days before you receive your Mehndi design.

Areas of the body where the skin is thicker and warmer such as the hands and feet will last longer and stain deeper than thinner areas such as chest, back and arms.

When is Henna used?

This ancient art precedes significant events and special occasions in Indian, Arabic, Indonesian and African nations. Henna is seen as a blessing that brings good fortune to the wearer. Today, trend setters have made MEHNDI a permanent part of Western culture. MEHNDI designs are enjoyed for beautiful temporary, safe and painless tattoos.

How do I care for my henna tattoo?

THE MUD OR PASTE WILL TAKE 25 MINUTES TO DRY. Do not touch or allow anything to come in contact with it. Leave the dried paste on for a minimum of one hour.

The longer the paste remains on the skin, the darker your design will get. Let it flake away naturally. Any dried henna that is left on the skin can be scraped away or rinsed quickly with warm water.

Care for your design

  • Expect your henna design to take 24 to 48 hours to oxidize and darken to its richest tone.
  • Do not scrub, exfoliate or use harsh soaps or lotions that contain alcohol or alpha hydroxy acids.
  • Applying oil, Vaseline or a non exfoliating lotion before and after showering will help your henna design last longer. Keep your design out of direct sunlight or wear a sun block.

Your henna design may last from seven to twenty-one days. Enjoy!
